Where battery sets earn their place

Anywhere a cable would show or a socket is out of reach: a wreath on the front door, a garland along the stairs, a window on an upper floor, a mirror, a mantel, a table centre, a gate post. The battery box tucks behind the greenery or sits on the sill, the timer brings the lights on at the same time each evening, and there is no transformer to find a home for.

Batteries and run time

Most sets take 3 AA batteries; the 400 to 1,000 LED multi-action sets take 3 C cells. On the 6-hour timer, alkaline AAs typically last three to five weeks in a 100 to 200 LED set; C cells and smaller sets last longer. Cold shortens battery life, so outdoor sets may need a change mid-season. Batteries are not included unless the listing says so, and the type and count are in every specification.

Outdoors

Several battery sets, including the Fit and Forget cluster and net sets, are rated for outdoor use. The lights are sealed; the battery box is splash resistant but not for standing water, so tuck it under the wreath or inside a porch and keep it off the ground.

How long do batteries last in Christmas lights?

Three to five weeks of 6-hour evenings on alkaline AAs in a 100 to 200 LED set. Larger sets on C cells last longer; cold weather outdoors shortens it.

Are batteries included?

Usually not. The battery type and number are listed on every set; buy alkaline or lithium AAs for the longest run.

Can battery lights go on a tree?

Yes. The 400 to 1,000 LED sets dress a full tree with the battery box hidden at the base, and the timer runs them each evening.
